How can energy-intensive regions meet ambitious climate targets without compromising economic viability? In this webinar recording, Dr. Robin Mutschler presents key insights from the Bündner Rheintal project—a regional energy system study tied to Work Package 19 of the SWEET ACHIEVE initiative.
Focusing on the Alpine Rhine Valley (Canton of Graubünden), Dr. Mutschler addresses the distinct decarbonization challenges of a region where heavy industry accounts for 63% of local CO₂ emissions. With two major point-source emitters—a cement plant (Holcim) and a waste-to-energy plant in Untervaz—sitting in close physical proximity, per capita emissions in the Rheintal reach nearly 11 tons per year, almost three times the Swiss average.
